Blackjack Terms and Glossary – A to Z
Blackjack has its own vocabulary, and knowing the terminology makes it much easier to follow strategy guides, understand dealer instructions, and discuss the game with other players. This glossary covers every term you are likely to encounter — from basic gameplay words to strategy concepts to the language used in card counting. Terms are organized alphabetically for easy reference.

A
- Ace
- The most flexible card in blackjack, worth either 1 or 11 depending on what benefits your hand.
- Ace-Rich
- A remaining deck or shoe containing a higher-than-average proportion of Aces. Favorable for the player.
- Anchorman (Anchor)
- The player in the last seat at the table — immediately to the dealer's right. Also called "third base." This player acts last before the dealer.
- Advantage Play
- Any legal method of gaining a mathematical edge over the casino, including card counting and shuffle tracking.
B
- Bankroll
- The total amount of money a player has set aside for gambling. Effective bankroll management is one of the most important long-term skills in blackjack.
- Basic Strategy
- The mathematically optimal set of decisions for every possible player hand versus dealer up card combination. Using basic strategy reduces the house edge to under 0.5% in well-structured games. See our full Basic Strategy guide.
- Bet Spread
- The ratio between a card counter's minimum and maximum bet. A larger spread allows greater profit from favorable counts but attracts more casino attention.
- Blackjack (Natural)
- An Ace plus any 10-value card dealt as the first two cards. Typically pays 3:2. The best possible starting hand.
- Burn Card
- A card removed from the top of the deck after a shuffle and placed in the discard tray without being played. Standard casino procedure.
- Bust
- Going over a total of 21. An automatic loss. If a player busts, they lose immediately regardless of the dealer's hand.
C
- Card Counting
- A technique used to track the ratio of high to low cards remaining in the shoe to adjust bets and strategy. Not illegal but discouraged by casinos. See our Card Counting guide.
- Cut Card
- A solid plastic card used to cut the deck after shuffling, and to signal when the shoe needs reshuffling.
D
- Deck Penetration
- The percentage of the shoe dealt before the cut card triggers a reshuffle. Higher penetration benefits card counters.
- Discard Tray
- The tray on the dealer's right where used cards are placed after each hand.
- Double Down
- A player option to double the original bet in exchange for exactly one more card. See our When to Double Down guide.
- Double After Split (DAS)
- A rule allowing players to double down on a hand created by splitting a pair. Player-favorable rule.
E
- Early Surrender
- A surrender option allowing the player to forfeit half their bet before the dealer checks for blackjack. Rarely offered; very favorable for the player.
- Edge
- The mathematical advantage one side holds. The "house edge" is the casino's statistical advantage, expressed as a percentage of each bet.
- Even Money
- An immediate 1:1 payout offered when a player holds blackjack and the dealer shows an Ace. Mathematically equivalent to taking insurance — generally not recommended.
- Expected Value (EV)
- The average monetary outcome of a bet or action over many repetitions. Basic strategy decisions are all based on expected value.
F
- Face Cards
- The Jack, Queen, and King. All face cards are worth 10 in blackjack.
- First Base
- The seat at the far left from the players' perspective — the first to receive cards and the first to act each hand.
- Flat Bet
- Betting the same amount on every hand with no variation.
H
- Hard Hand
- A hand with no Ace, or one where the Ace must count as 1 to avoid busting. See Card Values.
- Hit
- To request one additional card from the dealer. See When to Hit.
- Hole Card
- The dealer's face-down card, hidden until after all players have acted.
- House Edge
- The mathematical advantage the casino holds over the player. Blackjack with basic strategy carries one of the lowest house edges of any casino game. See our House Edge guide.
I
- Insurance
- A side bet offered when the dealer shows an Ace, paying 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. Generally a losing bet for most players. See our Insurance guide.
L
- Late Surrender
- The most common surrender form — fold the hand after the dealer checks for blackjack, forfeiting half the bet. See our When to Surrender guide.
- Long Run
- A large enough sample of hands for statistical expectations to materialize. Short-term results vary widely; the long run reflects true expected outcomes.
M
- Martingale
- A betting system that doubles the bet after every loss. High-risk with significant potential for catastrophic loss. See our Betting Systems page.
N
- Natural
- Another term for a blackjack — Ace plus any 10-value card on the first two cards dealt.
- No-Hole-Card Game
- A variant common in Europe where the dealer receives only one card until all players have acted. Changes optimal doubling and splitting strategy slightly.
P
- Pat Hand
- A hand of 17 or higher — a total where you stand without drawing additional cards.
- Push
- A tie between the player and dealer. The player's bet is returned with no winnings paid.
R
- RNG (Random Number Generator)
- The software algorithm used in online blackjack games to produce random card outcomes. Certified systems ensure genuine randomness.
- Running Count
- In card counting, the cumulative count since the last shuffle before adjusting for decks remaining. See our Running Count vs True Count page.
S
- Shoe
- A device holding multiple shuffled decks that allows the dealer to dispense cards one at a time. Standard at multi-deck tables.
- Soft Hand
- A hand containing an Ace counted as 11. Cannot bust on the next card. See Card Values.
- Split
- Dividing a pair into two separate hands, each with its own bet. See When to Split.
- Stand
- Keep your current hand and end your turn. See When to Stand.
- Stiff Hand
- A hand total of 12 through 16 — totals where hitting risks busting but standing may not beat the dealer. The most difficult range to play correctly.
- Surrender
- Forfeit a hand for half the original bet back. See When to Surrender.
T
- Third Base
- The last player seat — acts immediately before the dealer. Also called the "anchor."
- True Count
- In card counting, the running count divided by decks remaining. Normalizes the count for shoe depth. See our True Count guide.
U
- Upcard
- The dealer's face-up card — visible to all players and the most important piece of information for making strategy decisions.
V
- Variance
- The statistical measure of how much results deviate from the expected average. High variance means results swing widely in the short term.
W
- Wonging
- A card counting technique named after Stanford Wong — observing a table without playing until the count becomes favorable, then joining mid-shoe. Increasingly restricted by "no mid-shoe entry" policies.
